1908 $20 St Gaudens Gold No Motto MS-67 PCGS (Wells Fargo)
The 1908 Saint-Gaudens double eagle represents a fascinating moment in American numismatic history. This twenty dollar gold piece features the famous "No Motto" design, omitting the traditional religious inscription. On the obverse, Liberty is depicted moving forward, holding a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with the United States Capitol building visible in the background. The reverse showcases a majestic eagle soaring across a background illuminated by the sun's rays. This specific gold coin has an extraordinary survival story, originating from the famous Wells Fargo Hoard. Discovered in the early 1990s, this massive hoard contained more than 15,000 Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar gold pieces. Some of these coins were hidden away in 1917, remaining completely undisturbed for more than five decades. Because they were tucked away safely, these coins managed to survive the federal gold confiscation of 1933, preserving a remarkable chapter of American coinage in exceptional condition.
