In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coin design with the five-dollar gold piece. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This innovative technique gives the coin a distinctively modern, sculptural depth that remains captivating to look at and touch. The obverse presents a profile of a Native American man wearing a traditional feathered war bonnet. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed above and the year 1908 below. Pratt's initials, B.L.P., are subtly placed on the base of the bust, though the OCR reading registers this as B.L.R. due to the unique styling of the lettering. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS. The national mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are positioned in the fields to the left and right of the eagle. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, these coins carry no mint mark. With a total mintage of 578,012 and containing 0.2419 troy ounces of 90 percent pure gold, this Almost Uncirculated specimen offers a wonderful window into a bold era of American numismatic artistry.
