In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coinage design with the five dollar gold piece, also known as the Half Eagle. This particular specimen, minted at the Philadelphia facility, showcases an innovative incuse design where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it.
