1908 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle MS-65 PCGS
1908 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle MS-65 PCGS
In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coinage design with the five dollar gold piece, also known as the Half Eagle. This particular specimen, minted at the Philadelphia facility, showcases an innovative incuse design where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This striking artistic approach gives the coin a distinct, modern appearance that remains celebrated today. The obverse of the coin features a realistic depiction of a Native American chief in a full feather headdress, a bold shift from the classical Liberty portraits of the nineteenth century. Surrounding the profile are stars representing the states, along with the date of issue. The reverse displays a proud, standing eagle, accompanied by the traditional national mottos including "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Struck from 0.900 fine gold with a precious metal content of 0.2419 troy ounces, this coin represents a total mintage of 577,845 pieces from the Philadelphia Mint, which did not use a mint mark. Having survived more than a century in exceptional condition, this piece has been certified by professional graders at Mint State 65, preserving the sharp details of its unique recessed engraving.
