1908 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle AU

0.2419 troy oz .900 1908 Almost Unc

The 1908 five dollar gold piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this half eagle contains 0.2419 troy ounces of gold within its 90 percent pure composition. Out of a total mintage of 421,874 pieces struck for this issue, those produced in Philadelphia are distinguished by the absence of any mint mark. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, whose hair band is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, shielded by a patriotic crest on its breast. The eagle is surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the five dollar face value, completing a design created by Christian Gobrecht.
