In 1908, the San Francisco Mint made numismatic history by striking its very first minor coin, the Indian Head Cent. Prior to this year, all cents had been produced exclusively at the main Philadelphia Mint. This particular example is certified in Mint State 63 Brown, preserving the crisp details of a low-mintage issue that saw a production run of just 1,115,000 pieces. The obverse of this historic copper coin features a profile of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress, with the word LIBERTY clearly visible on the band. Surrounding her portrait is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1908 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, the coin displays the denomination ONE CENT centered within a lush oak wreath. A small shield rests at the top of the design, while three arrows are bound together by a ribbon bow at the bottom. Crucially, the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint is located just below the bow, marking this coin as a landmark release for West Coast coin production.
