1909 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle AU

0.2419 troy oz .900 1909 Almost Unc

The 1909 five dollar gold piece represents a radical departure from traditional coinage methods. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin features an incuse design, meaning the details are pressed deep into the metal rather than rising above the surface. This sunken relief technique gives the coin a completely flat profile, protecting the intricate details from heavy wear while creating a striking visual depth. On the obverse, a Native American chief wearing a traditional feathered headdress faces left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above, with the year 1909 positioned below the portrait. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands atop a bundle of arrows, wrapped in an olive branch. The inscriptions include the country of origin, the denomination of five dollars, and the traditional mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck at the Philadelphia mint, these coins do not carry a mint mark. Each piece is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. Out of a total mintage of 627,060 pieces, this specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the unique recessed details of this innovative American coin.
