1909 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle MS-64 PCGS
In 1909, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 627,060 gold five-dollar coins, known to enthusiasts as the Indian Gold Half Eagle. This series stands out in the history of American coinage due to its revolutionary incuse design. Unlike traditional coins where the details are raised above the flat surface, the imagery and inscriptions on this gold piece are sunken directly into the metal, creating a flat outer plane that protects the intricate details from wear. The obverse features a profile of a Native American chief wearing a ceremonial headdress, surrounded by the word LIBERTY and the 1909 date. On the reverse, a proud eagle stands amidst the classic national mottos, including E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Because there is no mint mark, we know this specific piece was struck at the main Philadelphia facility. Finding these sunken-relief coins in high grades is exceptionally difficult because the flat fields were highly susceptible to scuffs and contact marks during handling. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at Mint State 64 (MS-65). It contains 0.2419 troy ounces of gold, representing a fascinating era of experimental and artistic minting.
