In 1909, the United States Mint produced a highly unusual variation within its premier gold denomination. The 1909/8 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle features a distinctive overdate, where the digit nine was struck directly over an eight. This issue represents the sole overdate occurrence in the entire run of this celebrated gold series, which spanned from 1907 to 1933. The coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 0.900. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the artwork, which is widely celebrated for its artistic depth. The front of the coin displays a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty walking forward against a backdrop of sunbeams, carrying a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. On the back, a majestic bald eagle glides through the air, accompanied by the bold inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS". With a total mintage of 161,215 pieces, these coins were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco mint facilities. This specific specimen has been certified and graded as Mint State 62 (MS-62), preserving a remarkable physical record of a rare engraving anomaly.
