1909-D $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle AU
The 1909-D gold five dollar coin represents a bold and unusual chapter in American numismatics. Minted in Denver, this half eagle stands out immediately because of its incuse design style. Instead of the raised elements found on most coinage, the imagery and inscriptions on this piece are sunken directly into the flat surface of the gold, creating a distinctive depth and texture. On the obverse, a Native American figure wearing a traditional feathered headdress faces left. This central portrait is encircled by thirteen stars, the word LIBERTY, and the 1909 date. The designer's initials, BLP, are also subtly visible above the date. This sunken relief technique gives the profile an incredibly sharp, protected silhouette. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows, wrapped in an olive branch. Surrounding the eagle are the classic inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS. The national mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are positioned in the open fields around the eagle. A small D mint mark is located to the left of the arrows, identifying its origin at the Denver Mint. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. With a historical mintage of 3,423,560 pieces, this specific coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its unique, recessed engraving for modern observers to appreciate.
