The year 1909 marked the end of an era for one of America's most beloved pocket coins. This copper cent, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, represents the final issue of the design series before the transition to the Lincoln portrait. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a distinct red-brown coloration, this piece offers a vivid look at the artistry of early twentieth-century American coinage. The obverse features a portrait of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feathered headdress, with the word LIBERTY clearly visible on the band. Encircling this central figure is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1909 positioned at the bottom. This design, created by James B. Longacre, served as a staple of American commerce for half a century. On the reverse, the denomination ONE CENT is framed by a detailed wreath. A small shield sits at the top of the design, while a bundle of arrows tied with a ribbon bow rests at the base. Composed of 95 percent copper alongside a 5 percent mixture of tin and zinc, this coin survives as a beautiful testament to the craftsmanship of its time.
