The year 1909 marked a major transition in American numismatics, representing the very last year of the beloved Indian Head cent design. This particular specimen is preserved in a certified Mint State 64 condition with a rich brown copper coloration, offering a remarkably clear window into the craftsmanship of the early twentieth century. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of the coin features a depiction of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress. The word LIBERTY is visible on the band of the headdress, while the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1909 frame the central figure. The metal composition of this coin consists of 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent made of tin and zinc. The reverse of the coin displays the denomination ONE CENT positioned directly in the center. This text is encircled by an ornate wreath, with a small shield positioned at the very top. At the base of the wreath, a bundle of arrows is secured by a tied bow, completing a design that defined America's minor coinage for half a century.
