In 1910, the Philadelphia mint produced a ten-dollar gold coin that remains a captivating example of American coinage. This piece contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 0.900. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, it does not bear a mint mark, making the clean fields of the design stand out even more. A total of 318,500 of these coins were struck that year, and this particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition. The obverse of the coin presents a distinctive interpretation of Lady Liberty. Instead of traditional classical wreaths or crowns, she wears an Native American war bonnet. Thirteen stars arch over her head, representing the original colonies, while the word LIBERTY is inscribed across her hair band. The year 1910 is positioned clearly at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands as the central focus. Surrounding the national bird are several key inscriptions, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN DOLLARS. The traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST are also integrated into the design, completing a masterpiece envisioned by the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
