1910 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle AU
The 1910 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional minting techniques. Unlike typical coinage with raised elements, this two and a half dollar piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken directly into the flat surface of the coin. This unusual sunken relief method gives the coin a distinct tactile quality and a completely different visual profile than its contemporaries. On the obverse, the design depicts Liberty wearing a full Native American headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars along the border. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above, with the year 1910 positioned below the portrait. The designer's initials, B.L.P., are also visible on the obverse. This striking depiction was minted during a specific window of American numismatic history, from 1908 to 1929. The reverse of this gold coin features a proud bald eagle standing left, accompanied by the traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, 2 1/2 DOLLARS, are clearly inscribed. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this particular coin contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal and has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a wonderful look at a highly unusual era of American coin design.
