The 1910 gold quarter eagle stands out as a remarkable example of American coinage, showcasing a distinctive incuse design where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual striking method gives the coin a unique texture and appearance. Created by artist Bela Lyon Pratt, this series was produced by the Philadelphia Mint from 1908 to 1929, representing a bold departure from traditional coin minting techniques. On the obverse, a portrait of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American feather headdress is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The word LIBERTY and the 1910 year of issue are also deeply impressed into the gold. The reverse displays a majestic bald eagle perched proudly, flanked by the classic mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the face value of two and a half dollars are clearly inscribed around the central image. Struck in 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen has survived in exceptional condition, certified by professional graders as Mint State 63 (MS-63), which preserves the sharp details of its innovative sunken relief.
