1910 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-64 NGC
The 1910 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coin minting. Unlike most coinage where the design elements are raised above the surface, this gold piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken directly into the flat plane of the coin. This unusual technique gives the coin a distinct physical texture and a striking visual depth. On the obverse, the coin displays a masculine depiction of Liberty, who is shown wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is ringed by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY positioned along the top edge and the 1910 date of issue stamped below. The reverse features a proud bald eagle standing amidst the classic inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the denomination of two and a half dollars. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a mint mark, this coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Out of a total mintage of 492,000 pieces, this particular specimen has survived in exceptional condition, certified by professional graders at a Mint State 64 level. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this issue remains one of the most intriguing examples of early twentieth-century American coinage.
