The 1910 five dollar gold coin stands out as a remarkable specimen of American coinage, representing a bold departure from traditional coining techniques. Struck at the Philadelphia mint with a mintage of 604,000, this piece contains 0.2419 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. What makes this issue particularly distinctive is its incuse design, meaning the details are pressed deep into the metal, leaving the background as the highest surface of the coin. On the obverse, the sunken relief depicts a Native American wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This portrait is encircled by thirteen stars, the word LIBERTY, and the 1910 date. Because this piece was struck in Philadelphia, it does not feature a mint mark. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle standing alongside the national mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the face value, FIVE DOLLARS, are also clearly inscribed.
