In 1910, the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint struck a remarkably small run of gold Sovereigns, totaling just 28,012 pieces. This Canadian-minted coin is a fascinating artifact from the Edwardian era, representing a brief window of time when Canada produced its own versions of the classic British gold denomination. Crafted from 0.917 fine gold, each coin contains 0.2354 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse of the coin displays the right-facing portrait of King Edward VII. Surrounding the royal likeness are the Latin inscriptions indicating his titles as King of Great Britain and Emperor of India. This side of the coin serves as a formal portrait of the monarch at the very end of his reign, as 1910 was the final year these pieces were produced with his effigy. The reverse features one of the most celebrated designs in numismatic history, created by Benedetto Pistrucci. It depicts the legendary scene of Saint George on horseback, rearing back to slay a dragon. This iconic imagery has graced British Sovereigns from 1871 through to the modern era. On this specific Canadian issue, a tiny letter 'C' is struck into the ground beneath the main design, identifying Ottawa as the mint of origin for this scarce gold coin.
