In 1911, the Philadelphia mint produced a ten dollar gold piece that remains one of the most distinctive designs in American numismatic history. This coin, composed of 0.900 fine gold and containing 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal, showcases the creative vision of artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Because it was struck at the Philadelphia facility, it features no mint mark, which was the standard practice for that location. The front of the coin presents a bold departure from traditional imagery, depicting Lady Liberty adorned in a Native American war bonnet. Thirteen stars arch over her head, representing the original colonies, while the word LIBERTY is clearly visible on her headband. The year 1911 is positioned directly beneath her portrait. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands as the central focus. The design incorporates several key inscriptions, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN DOLLARS. The traditional mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM are also integrated into the reverse field, completing a classic piece of early twentieth-century American coinage.
