1911 $10 Indian Gold Eagle XF
In 1911, the Philadelphia mint produced a ten dollar gold coin that remains one of the most distinctive examples of American coinage. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, this piece contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, it does not bear a mint mark, making it a pure representation of the original design concept. The obverse of the coin features a profile of Lady Liberty adorned with a traditional Native American war bonnet, a creative departure from more conventional depictions of Liberty. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies, while the word LIBERTY is inscribed directly onto her hair band. The year 1911 is positioned clearly at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands as the central focus. The bird is surrounded by several traditional inscriptions, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The denomination is spelled out at the bottom as TEN DOLLARS. This entire composition was envisioned by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, resulting in a coin that is as much a work of art as it was a medium of exchange.
