1911 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle AU
In 1911, the Philadelphia mint produced a gold quarter eagle that stands out as a remarkable departure from traditional coinage. Unlike most coins with raised features, this two and a half dollar piece utilizes an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken directly into the flat surface of the gold. This innovative technique gives the coin a distinct flat profile and a highly tactile quality. The obverse features a profile of Liberty wearing a full Native American headdress, encircled by thirteen stars. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above, accompanied by the 1911 date and the designer's initials, B.L.P., near the base. Because this coin was struck at the Philadelphia mint, it does not bear a mint mark. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands left, surrounded by the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The traditional mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are also deeply incised into the coin's fields. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this piece contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal and survived from an original mintage of 704,000 to remain in Almost Uncirculated condition.
