The 1911 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage design. Struck by the United States Mint, this two and a half dollar coin contains 0.1209 ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. What makes this issue particularly captivating is its recessed, or incuse, design elements, which sit below the flat surface of the coin rather than raising above it. On the obverse, the design showcases a portrait of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed along the top curve and the year 1911 positioned at the bottom. The reverse side of the coin is dedicated to a majestic bald eagle standing proudly. The inscriptions surrounding the eagle include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the national mottoes IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination of 2 1/2 DOLLARS. Sculpted by Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin is a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American numismatic artistry, preserved in certified Mint State 63 condition.
