1911 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-63 PCGS
The 1911 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coin design. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this two and a half dollar gold piece contains 0.12094 ounces of gold. Unlike most coinage with raised features, this series employs an innovative sunken relief technique, where the details are carved directly into the flat surface of the coin. On the obverse, the design showcases a realistic portrait of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, the word LIBERTY, and the 1911 date. The designer's initials, B.L.P., are also visible on the obverse, though the OCR transcription records a slight variation as B.L.R. The reverse depicts a proud bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS, and the traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Because this issue was produced in Philadelphia, it features no mint mark, leaving the fields clean and highlighting the total mintage of 704,000 pieces.
