1911 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle XF

0.2419 troy oz .900 1911 Extra Fine

The 1911 five dollar gold coin represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage methods. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue belongs to a series produced from 1908 to 1929 that is celebrated for its highly unusual incuse design. Instead of the raised features typical of most circulating currency, the motifs and inscriptions on this coin are recessed, sunken directly into the flat surface of the gold planchet. On the obverse, a Native American figure wearing a detailed ceremonial headdress faces left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the top curve, with the date 1911 positioned at the bottom. The designer's initials, B.L.P., are subtly placed just above the date. This side showcases the unique sunken relief that defines the aesthetic of the era. The reverse displays a proud, standing bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and holding an olive branch. The inscriptions include the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination of five dollars. The traditional mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are carefully placed in the open fields surrounding the bird. Composed of 90 percent gold and containing 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal, this particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the distinct contours of this innovative artistic experiment.
