In 1911, a major milestone in Canadian numismatics occurred when the Ottawa Mint produced its very first Canadian-made sovereign coin. This historic issue, struck in 0.9167 fine gold, carries a precious metal content of 0.2354 troy ounces. Its creation marked a new chapter for the local mint, which placed a tiny, distinctive letter C on the ground beneath the reverse illustration to denote its Ottawa origin. The coin features two classic designs that have captivated observers for generations. On the obverse, one finds the detailed portrait of King George V, designed by E.B. Mackennal. The reverse displays the legendary scene of St. George on horseback, engaged in combat with a dragon, a masterpiece created by Benedetto Pistrucci. This specific specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of this low mintage release of only 257,048 pieces.
