In 1911, the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint produced a run of 757,750 gold double eagles, each containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold. This pre-1933 issue represents a fascinating moment in American numismatic design, captured just before a major visual update. On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted striding forward with the rays of the sun beaming behind her. Surrounding her are 46 stars, a count that would increase to 48 stars the very next year, in 1912. The reverse of this twenty-dollar coin showcases a majestic bald eagle captured mid-flight. Above the eagle, the inscription reads "United States of America," while the denomination "Twenty Dollars" is clearly marked below. Unlike the earliest issues of this series from 1907 to 1908, which omitted the religious motto, this 1911 release includes "In God We Trust" on the reverse. Adding to its intricate design, the edge of the coin features the raised letters of "E Pluribus Unum" separated by stars, rather than a traditional reeded border.
