In 1911, the San Francisco Mint struck a run of 1,416,000 gold five dollar pieces, commonly known as the Indian Head Half Eagle. This particular specimen survives in an impressive state of preservation, certified as Almost Uncirculated 53 (AU-53). It represents a fascinating era in United States coinage when traditional raised designs were cast aside in favor of a revolutionary, recessed format. Unlike standard coins where the details rise above the flat surface, this gold piece features an incuse design. The entire artistic composition, including the profile of a Native American chief on the obverse and a proud standing eagle on the reverse, is sunken below the outer fields. This unique approach was intended to protect the intricate details of the coin from wearing down quickly during everyday circulation. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. The reverse features the classic American mottos, including the Latin phrase meaning "out of many, one" alongside the traditional declaration of trust. The subtle "S" mint mark, located on the reverse to the left of the eagle's perch, identifies this intriguing artifact as a product of the historic San Francisco Mint.
