In 1911, the San Francisco Mint produced a remarkable five dollar gold piece that stands out for its unusual minting technique. Unlike traditional coinage where the details stand out in relief above the surface, this coin features an incuse design, meaning the entire image and lettering are sunken directly into the metal. This innovative approach, crafted by Bela Lyon Pratt, gives the coin a completely flat profile while protecting the intricate details of the artwork from wear. The front of the coin displays a detailed profile of a Native American wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY positioned along the top edge and the date 1911 at the bottom.
