1912-1914 Canada Gold $10 BU

0.4837 troy oz .900 1912 Brilliant Unc

In the early twentieth century, Canada produced a magnificent ten-dollar gold coin that would spend most of its existence hidden from the public eye. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, these pieces contain 0.4837 troy ounces of precious metal. Although intended for commerce, these gold denominations were quickly withdrawn from active circulation and secured deep within the vaults of the Bank of Canada, where they remained undisturbed for generations. The obverse of this national treasure features the profile of King George V, surrounded by the Latin inscription denoting his royal title. On the reverse, the design showcases the early coat of arms of Canada, framed elegantly by branches of maple leaves. The legend on the reverse clearly displays the country name and the face value of ten dollars. Decades after they were locked away, the destiny of these coins took a dramatic turn. While more than 200,000 of them were eventually melted down into simple bullion bars, a select group of 30,000 coins was saved from the melting pot in 2012. This preserved hoard allowed historians and numismatists to examine these brilliant uncirculated specimens, which survive as fully authorized, government-backed relics of Canada's early monetary history.
