1912 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle AU

0.1209 troy oz .900 1912 Almost Unc

The 1912 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coin design, featuring an innovative incuse or sunken relief style. Unlike standard coins where the images raise above the surface, the details of this two and a half dollar piece are carved directly into the metal. This distinctive technique gives the coin a completely flat profile while protecting the intricate details of the artwork from heavy wear. On the obverse, a masculine depiction of Liberty is shown wearing a detailed ceremonial headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the 1912 year of issue. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle standing amidst the national mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the issuing country and the denomination of 2 1/2 DOLLARS framing the scene. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mint mark and contains 0.1209 troy ounces of gold within its 90 percent pure alloy.
