1913 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle BU
The 1913 gold quarter eagle represents a radical departure from traditional coin minting. Unlike typical coins where the design stands out in relief above the surface, this two and a half dollar gold piece features an incuse design style. The entire image and lettering are sunken below the flat surface of the coin, a rare and striking aesthetic choice that makes this series highly distinctive. On the obverse, a masculine depiction of Liberty is shown wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed along the top curve and the 1913 date positioned below. The Philadelphia Mint produced 722,000 of these coins this year, and as is typical for this mint, they do not bear a mint mark. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle standing amidst the essential national mottos. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The denomination is expressed at the bottom as 2 1/2 DOLLARS. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin is struck from 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal, and remains a fascinating study in early twentieth-century American numismatic artistry.
