In 1913, a bold new aesthetic emerged in American coinage with the introduction of the Buffalo Nickel. This particular specimen represents the very first variety of the design, known as Type I. It showcases a powerful profile on the obverse and a majestic American bison on the reverse, standing proudly on a raised mound of dirt. This specific coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which produced 30,992,000 of these nickels that year, leaving the space below the bison free of any mint mark. Underneath the central figure, the denomination is clearly inscribed as FIVE CENTS. Having survived more than a century with its original details beautifully intact, this coin is certified in an outstanding Mint State 65 (MS-65) condition. Its preservation offers a vivid window into early twentieth-century minting artistry, capturing the texture and relief of the original design just as it appeared when it first left the coining press.
