The year 1913 marked a major transition for United States five-cent coinage. This particular specimen represents the Type II design of the Buffalo Nickel, a celebrated series that captures the spirit of the American West. Sculpted by James Fraser, the coin features two distinct, powerful subjects that departed from the traditional depiction of Liberty. On the obverse, a detailed profile of a Native American chief faces right, showing a rugged realism. The reverse displays a massive American bison standing proudly. Unlike the Type I version where the animal stood on a raised mound, the Type II design places the bison on a flat line of ground, which helped protect the denomination inscription from wearing away too quickly. This piece has survived in remarkable condition, certified as Mint State 64 (MS-64). At this high grade, the intricate details of the bison's fur and the strong facial features of the Native American portrait remain exceptionally sharp and clear for observers to appreciate.
