In 1913, the United States Mint introduced a dramatic shift in its coinage design with the American Buffalo nickel. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this five cent piece departed from traditional neoclassical imagery to showcase icons of the American West. The obverse presents a detailed profile of a Native American chieftain, while the reverse features a massive American bison. This specific coin represents the Type II variety of the inaugural year, minted in Denver. The original Type I design featured the bison standing on a raised mound, which caused the denomination inscription to wear away too quickly in circulation. To solve this issue, the design was quickly modified to Type II, placing the bison on a flat, recessed plain to protect the five cents inscription. This Denver Mint issue, graded in Fine 12 condition, displays the distinctive 'D' mint mark beneath the flat ground on the reverse, serving as a tangible survivor of this design transition.
