The year 1913 marked a dramatic shift in American coinage with the introduction of the Buffalo Nickel. This inaugural issue departed from classical European allegories, turning instead to the raw beauty of the American West. Sculpted by James Earle Fraser, the coin presents a powerful profile of a Native American on the obverse, accompanied by the simple inscription of liberty. On the reverse, a massive American bison stands atop a raised mound of earth. This specific mound treatment defines the Type I variety of the coin's debut year. Below the grassy hill, the denomination is rendered as "FIVE CENTS," while the "D" mint mark below the mound indicates its origin at the Denver Mint. This particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine textures of the bison's fur and the strong contours of the native portrait.
