The year 1913 marked the debut of one of America's most iconic circulating designs, the Buffalo Nickel. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this coin departed from traditional neoclassical imagery to showcase authentic American themes. The obverse presents a powerful, detailed profile of a Native American, capturing a rugged realism that was revolutionary for United States coinage at the time. On the reverse of this Type I variety, a massive American bison stands atop a raised mound of dirt. It is this specific mound that defines the Type I design, as it was modified later in the same year to protect the denomination from premature wear. Below the bison, the Denver Mint's 'D' mint mark is clearly visible, identifying its origin. The inscription 'FIVE CENTS' sits directly on the mound, accompanied by the motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' above the animal's back, completing a masterpiece of American numismatic art.
