In 1913, the United States five-cent piece underwent a significant design evolution. This particular coin represents the Type II variety, minted in Denver, which modified the ground beneath the bison from a raised mound to a flat plain. This change was made to better protect the denomination inscription from wearing away during circulation. The obverse displays a powerful profile of a Native American, a design created by James Earle Fraser. On the reverse, an American bison stands on the newly flattened ground. Just below this depiction, the Denver Mint mark is visible alongside the denomination, while the motto of national unity appears above.
