In 1913, the United States Mint introduced a striking new five-cent piece that departed from traditional classical allegories, celebrating instead the rugged beauty of the American West. Sculpted by James Earle Fraser, this coin presents a powerful profile of a Native American on its front side, accompanied by the single word "LIBERTY" and the date of production. The reverse side of this particular variety depicts an American bison standing upon a flat surface. This "Type II" design modification was introduced to resolve issues with the rapid wear of the coin's denomination. Below the majestic animal, the value is clearly indicated, while the Denver Mint's "D" mark is positioned underneath, denoting its origin.
