1913-S Buffalo Nickel Type-II XF-40 NGC
In 1913, the United States Mint introduced a dramatic redesign for the five-cent piece, celebrating native themes of the American West. This particular issue, struck at the San Francisco Mint, represents the Type II variety of the inaugural year. On this version, the ground beneath the bison was modified from a raised mound to a flat, recessed line to protect the denomination from premature wear during circulation. The obverse displays a powerful profile of a Native American chieftain, facing right, with the word "LIBERTY" and the date "1913" clearly visible. On the reverse, a magnificent American bison stands facing left. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" frame the animal, while the denomination "FIVE CENTS" is positioned at the very bottom. This copper-nickel coin has been certified in Extremely Fine 40 (XF-40) condition, preserving the fine details of James Fraser's iconic artwork.
