1913-S Type-I Buffalo Nickel VG
In 1913, the United States introduced a striking new five-cent piece that departed dramatically from previous coinage aesthetics. This initial version, known to collectors as the Type I, showcases a highly detailed portrait of a Native American chieftain on the obverse, facing right. The simple inscription of liberty is placed along the upper right edge of the coin. The reverse side of this coin features a powerful American bison standing atop a prominent, raised mound of earth. It is on this very mound that the denomination is placed, a design element that was modified later in the same year. Just below the mound, the distinctive "S" mint mark indicates that this piece was struck at the San Francisco Mint. James Earle Fraser created this iconic design, capturing a rugged, uniquely American spirit in the coin's textures and composition.
