1913-S Type-II Buffalo Nickel Good
In 1913, the United States introduced a striking new five-cent piece that departed from traditional classical allegories. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this coin celebrates the American West through two distinct portraits. The front of the coin displays a detailed profile of a Native American, while the reverse showcases a massive American bison. This particular coin represents the Type II design variant minted in San Francisco. On the original Type I version, the bison stood atop a raised mound of dirt. Because the denomination inscription on that mound wore away too quickly in circulation, the design was modified. On this Type II variety, the ground beneath the bison was flattened into a straight line, recessing the words FIVE CENTS below it to protect the text from wear. Bearing the "S" mint mark beneath the denomination, this coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint. While similar coins produced in Philadelphia lack any mint mark, this West Coast issue carries that tiny letter as a testament to its origin. Even in its worn, Good condition, the coin preserves the essential elements of Fraser's iconic work, capturing a transitional moment in American numismatic design.
