The year 1913 marked the debut of one of America's most distinctive circulating designs, the Buffalo Nickel. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this coin departed from traditional classical allegories to present imagery deeply rooted in the American landscape and heritage. The obverse presents a powerful, detailed profile of a Native American, while the reverse features a majestic American bison. This particular coin represents the Type II variety of the inaugural year, struck at the San Francisco Mint. In this modified version, the reverse design was altered so that the denomination inscription, FIVE CENTS, sits below a flat ground line. This adjustment protected the text from premature wear during circulation. The upper portion of the reverse carries the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, framing the iconic bison.
