The 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel represents the very beginning of one of America's most celebrated circulating coin designs. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this five-cent piece captures a rugged, uniquely American aesthetic. The front of the coin features a powerful profile of a Native American, while the reverse displays a massive American bison standing proudly on a raised mound of earth. This particular specimen is heavily circulated, a true survivor of daily commerce from the early twentieth century. Because of this extensive wear, the original 1913 date is no longer visible on the surface. Additionally, while coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint were produced without a mint mark, this piece could also have originated from the Denver or San Francisco facilities, adding an element of mystery to its long journey through American hands.
