The year 1913 marked the debut of one of America's most recognizable five-cent pieces. Created by designer James Earle Fraser, this inaugural-year coin features a powerful profile of a Native American on its obverse, accompanied by the year of issue. On the reverse, a magnificent American bison stands as the central focus. This particular coin represents the Type II design variation. In this modified version, the denomination inscription of "FIVE CENTS" is positioned clearly beneath the mound on which the bison stands, a change from the initial Type I design where the bison stood on a raised hill.
