In 1913, the United States introduced a distinct five-cent piece that celebrated the rugged spirit of the American West. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this coin features a powerful portrait of a Native American chief on the obverse, while the reverse showcases a massive American bison. This particular coin represents the Type II design, which was quickly modified during the first year of production to address a practical wear issue. On the initial Type I version, the bison stood on a raised mound, which caused the denomination inscription to wear away rapidly in circulation. The Type II revision solved this by flattening the ground beneath the bison's hooves and placing the words FIVE CENTS within a protective, recessed space. This Philadelphia Mint issue bears no mint mark, which is characteristic of coins struck at the main facility. It survives in Very Good condition, offering a tangible look at a classic piece of American coinage history.
