The year 1913 marked a significant transition for America's five-cent piece. Sculptor James Earle Fraser created a striking, uniquely American aesthetic for this coinage, replacing the long-running Liberty Head design. The obverse presents a powerful, detailed portrait of a Native American chieftain, while the reverse showcases a magnificent American bison. This particular coin represents the Type II variety of the inaugural year. In the original Type I design, the bison stood on a raised mound of dirt, which caused the denomination inscription to wear away quickly in circulation. To solve this practical issue, the design was modified so the bison stands on a flat, recessed plane, protecting the words FIVE CENTS from premature wear. Backed by the United States government, this Philadelphia-minted coin survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the bold details of Fraser's legendary artwork.
