In 1914, the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint struck a remarkably small run of twenty-dollar gold pieces, totaling just 95,250 coins. This low production makes the issue a particularly compelling subject for study. Each piece contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold within its overall 0.900 fine gold composition, representing the height of early twentieth-century American precious metal coinage. The visual design, created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, is widely celebrated for its artistic energy. On the obverse, Lady Liberty strides forward into the viewer's field of vision, holding a lit torch to guide the way and an olive branch as a symbol of peace, while stylized rays of the sun rise behind her. The reverse side captures a majestic bald eagle soaring through the sky. This series, produced from 1907 to 1933, showcases elegant lettering. The reverse clearly displays the country of origin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," alongside the face value, "TWENTY DOLLARS." This specific 1914 issue has survived in a certified Mint State 62 condition, preserving the intricate details of a historic era in American coinage.
