The 1914 five-cent piece stands as an early representative of one of America's most recognizable coin designs. Created by James Fraser, this series departed from traditional neoclassical imagery to celebrate themes native to the North American continent. The Philadelphia Mint produced over 20 million of these nickels in 1914, and surviving examples in high-grade condition offer a clear look at the artistry of the era. On the obverse, a detailed profile of a Native American man faces right, with the year of issue cleanly struck on his shoulder. The reverse showcases a powerful American bison positioned on a raised mound of earth. The inscriptions include the national motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, positioned above the animal, and the denomination of FIVE CENTS running along the bottom. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), preserving the intricate textures of the hair, hide, and field as they appeared more than a century ago.
