The 1914 Denver Mint quarter eagle represents a fascinating chapter in American numismatics, showcasing a design that physically sinks into the coin's surface. Unlike traditional coins with raised details, this gold piece features an incuse design where the fields are the highest points. This innovative approach gives the coin a distinct texture and depth. On the obverse, a masculine depiction of Liberty is shown wearing a detailed ceremonial headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the 1914 year of issue. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. The Denver origin is marked by a small D mint mark, while the reverse also carries the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of two and a half dollars. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this issue has survived the decades in About Uncirculated condition, graded AU 58, preserving the intricate details of its unique sunken relief.
