The 1914 Denver Mint gold quarter eagle stands out as a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a total mintage of 448,000 pieces, making it a fascinating artifact of the pre-1933 era of United States circulating gold. This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition. What truly distinguishes this coin is its revolutionary incuse design style, where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. On the obverse, designer Bela Lyon Pratt depicted a masculine representation of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American feathered headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, with the word 'LIBERTY' placed along the top rim and the date 1914 positioned at the bottom. The reverse of the coin features a proud bald eagle standing amidst several traditional inscriptions. Surrounding the eagle are the phrases 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', the national mottoes 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' and 'IN GOD WE TRUST', and the face value of '2 1/2 DOLLARS'. The Denver Mint mark 'D' is also visible on this side, indicating its origin at the Colorado facility.
