In 1914, the Denver Mint struck this magnificent twenty-dollar gold coin, a piece that stands today as a survivor of a bygone era in American currency. This issue belongs to a celebrated series produced from 1907 to 1933, a run that came to an abrupt end when President Franklin Roosevelt recalled circulating gold coinage. Because so many of these coins were subsequently melted down, surviving specimens in exceptional condition are highly prized by those who appreciate the intersection of art and monetary history. The design, crafted by the famous artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, is widely considered one of the most beautiful ever to grace a United States coin. The front of the piece features Lady Liberty stepping forward, illuminated by the rays of a rising sun. In her hands, she carries a torch to light the way and an olive branch representing peace. The year 1914 is clearly visible on this side, anchoring the design to the eve of the First World War. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle is captured mid-flight, soaring across a sunlit sky. This side bears the bold inscriptions indicating the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the face value of TWENTY DOLLARS. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains exactly 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable preservation, certified in a superb state of conservation as Mint State 65+.
